A lump removal is a surgical procedure to remove an abnormal growth. A lump or tumor can be either benign or malignant. Benign tumors are well-circumscribed and are generally easy to remove completely. In contrast, cancers pose some of the most difficult problems in all of the surgery. To diagnose cancer, some types of biopsy techniques are used:

  • Aspiration biopsy. A needle is inserted into the tumor and a sample is withdrawn.

  • Incisional biopsy. A portion of a tumor is removed.

  • Excisional biopsy. A whole lesion is removed along with surrounding normal tissue.

Retesting and periodical examinations are necessary to ensure that a tumor has not reformed after total removal.
