We’ve had many questions regarding the canine influenza (strain H3N2) outbreak in Chicago. Canine flu is something to be concerned about in dogs that are at high risk for contracting the virus (dogs that attend daycare, boarding kennels, dog shows, dog parks, grooming facilities). This is a new strain of flu and research is currently being done to answer questions about this virus. Dogs receiving the influenza vaccine should also receive the bordetella vaccine because the diseases are frequently contracted simultaneously. Vaccinating for both offers the best protection that is currently available. It is important to know that just like with human flu vaccines, the canine influenza and bordetella vaccines do not protect from all strains of the diseases.
We have not had any cases here but please visit www.avma.org for the latest information or give us a call if you are concerned.
